The ways Charles Dickens tries Essay Talk about some of the ways Charles Dickens tries to interest the reader in chapter one and two of Great Expectations. What does the reader learn about what life was like in the Victorian period from these two chapters? Charles Dickens was born in 1812 (19th century), during the Victorian period. He wrote Great Expectations (novel) between 1860 and 1861 in 36 weekly instalments in order to interest his readers. Each weekly part had to sell and also it had to interest the reader. It was Victorian equivalent of a soap drama. Charles Dickens was like a modern soap opera writer, because he wrote about the problems and crimes, which were going on in those days society. Great Expectations is written from the point of view of a young innocent boy whose five siblings are dead. This novel is written as a melodrama as everything can be seen through Pips eyes and how he reacts with different problems in his life. The novel Great Expectations is written in the first person narrative and by using this narrator the writer has tried to interest the reader by personalising the story. Pip the main character of this novel is an orphan who lives with his sister Mrs Joe Gargery and his husband Joe Gargery who is a blacksmith. The opening paragraph of chapter one, though without dialogue was a bit dry and perhaps a bit dry, but Charles Dickens perfectly managed to draw a cold and gloomy image of churchyard in the readers mind. The first picture that Charles Dickens creates is of a young boy being Pip who is crying by the graveside of his parents and brothers on a misty marsh on a cold and windy winters afternoon. Five little stone lozenges memory of the five little brothers of mine who gave up trying to get a living. This draws the readers attention to Pip feeling isolated. Dickens also shows this isolation by saying that Pip is getting a vivid picture of his father and mother, whom Pip has never seen. This makes the reader to feel sorry for Pip as a young aged boy who has no image of his parents, as photographs werent invented then. Their days were long before the days of photograph. Charles Dickens highlights the danger of Pips environment and his weakness to his surrounding by through the descriptions of the landscape. Dickens uses threatening metaphors like Low leaden line and Savage lair. These threats hint and prepare the reader for other incidents later on in the book. Charles Dickens also builds on the first impression of the danger of the marsh by using the colours such as red and black, which are associated with death, Angry red lines, With dense black lines intermixed. Then Dickens creates a vigorous image of Pip imagining Magwitch as the hanged pirate limping towards the gibbet. This image prepares the reader for the death of Magwitch. At the end of chapter one Dickens creates a very dramatic visual image of Pip looking out at his surroundings. Dickens also creates a striking vision of hell by describing Pip seeing the marshes as a long black horizontal line, then the rivers as another, yet not so broad, yet not so black and then the sky as just a row of angry red lines and dense black lines intermixed. Dickens describes the lines as angry, also suggesting the atmosphere is uneasy and unsafe. Dickens adds to the drama of the description by adding the image of the gibbet, which is also associated with death. It was said that God was punishing the Jews,and the rest of the world, for not receiving Him, and once the Jews weregone, the Garden of Eden would thrive again. This ridiculous theory waslater declared unchristian by the Second Vatican Council (Roth 47). Anti-Semitism was even in an innocent childrens fairy tale. In SnowWhite , the children were to think of Snow White as Nazi Germany afterWorld War One, the apple that put the beautiful princess to sleep wasthe Jewish people, and the wonderful, handsome prince was AdolphHitler who woke the beautiful princess with a kiss, which represented hisleadership (Zeman 76). Another reason for anti-Semitisms great popularity was that, for a fact,people enjoy hate. American Apartheid by Douglas S. Massey and Nancy A. Denton Paper The book American Apartheid by Douglas S. Massey and Nancy A. Denton is an eye-opening book that throws light on the issues of poverty and seclusion among African Americans. Contrary to many illusions and simplistic assumptions about the economic backwardness of blacks in America, Massey and Denton show that the community’s poverty is directly linked to its ‘segregation’ within the urban landscape. The authors suggest that segregation occurs in urban spaces through an interlocking mix of actions by individuals, policies adopted by institutions and practices followed by government agencies. In some cities, the extent of black segregation is so pronounced and affects many aspects of the community’s experience that it is aptly termed as ‘hyper-segregation’. Massey and Denton point out that during periods of economic slowdown or recession, the segregation process gets accelerated. During such conditions, the acuteness of poverty pushes most black Americans into cheaper real-estate locales, thereby contributing to ghetto-formation. Within the ghetto, the social and economic conditions are markedly inferior compared to suburban locales. The black community, thus marginalized, tries to adapt to the harsh realities by way of evolving attitudes, behaviors, beliefs and customs that further alienate them from mainstream American culture and society. For example, as the wealthier (usually white) residents migrate towards suburbia, they inadvertently also reduce the tax base which directly affects funding for educational institutions in the area. It then becomes a cyclical process, whereby those families that can afford to leave to upscale areas do so further decreasing the tax base and education. Ethnic enclaves are thus created, which disincent ives businesses interests due to the economic profile of residents as well as law and order problems in such neighborhoods. Even whites who are interested to buy housing in the neighborhood are put-off for same reasons. They occur because segregation concentrates poverty to build a set of mutually reinforcing and self-feeding spirals of decline into black neighborhoods. When economic dislocations deprive a segregated group of employment and increase its rate of poverty, socioeconomic deprivation inevitably becomes more concentrated in neighborhoods where that group lives. The damaging social consequences that follow from increased poverty are spatially concentrated as well, creating uniquely disadvantaged environments that become progressively isolated – geographically, socially, and economically – from the rest of society.† (Massey Denton, 1993, p.72) As I read through the book, I became increasingly convinced of its central thesis, namely that an American version of Apartheid does exist after all. But what took me by surprise was the fact that blacks are particularly more victimized when compared to other minority groups. I realized that while economic and lifestyle motives are at the core of housing segregation, the unspoken presence of racial discrimination (against blacks) too plays a role. In other words black segregation is not comparable to the often limited and temporary segregation experienced by other ethnic and racial communities in America, historically or contemporaneously. That no other minority group in history had to endure ‘sustained high level of residential segregation’ had affected me emotionally. This extreme racial isolation is not accidental at all, but rather â€Å"manufactured by whites through a series of self-conscious actions and purposeful institutional arrangements that continue today. Similar patterns are observed when segregation is examined by education and occupation. No matter how socioeconomic status is measured, therefore, black segregation remains universally high while that of Hispanics and Asians falls progressively as status rises. Only blacks experience a pattern of constant, high segregation that is impervious to socioeconomic influences. The persistence of racial segregation in American cities, therefore, is a matter of race and not class.† (Massey Denton, 1993, p.65) Another salient feature of the book that caught my attention is its insight and fresh perspective. When one looks at mainstream American political discourse today, the debaters come from one of two sections of the political divide. On one side are representatives like Newt Gingrich , Mitt Romney, etc, who espouse a vehemently skeptical view of social welfare (of which black Americans are major beneficiaries). Belonging to this conservative side are media personalities like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, etc. This group consistently attacks the notion of a welfare state and reckons that the black community has to lift itself out of poverty and its ghettos. On the other hand, liberal commentators argue the role played by the white establishment in bolstering the prospects of whites at the cost of blacks. What Murray and Denton have done is to bring a new perspective to the issue. They effectively show how the process of construction of urban spaces is both a cause and consequence of larg er economic currents bearing upon society. Thereby, the authors imply a novel method of creating equitable societies – via the method of fair, equitable and desegregated housing. This suggestion struck me as a creative solution to the problem of poverty among minority communities. Currently, the process of hyper-segregation is one of the biggest malaises to afflict American society. Hence, the authors sound a warning that despite political rhetoric and the example of a black President, the black community’s fortunes in America are still dismal. Not only is the â€Å"depth of black segregation unprecedented and utterly unique compared with that of other groups, but it shows little sign of change with the passage of time or improvements in socioeconomic status.† Hence, policy makers will have to act upon constructive recommendations made by Douglas Massey and Nancy Denton for resolving this pressing problem. As all substances have different Internal Energy, this explains why different substances require different amount of energy to change the temperature. Studies from A2 explain that Internal Energy (Thermal Energy) is the sum of the kinetic energy and the potential energy of the molecules in an object or substance. If the temperature of a substance increases so does the internal energy. Referring back to knowledge gained from A1 when a substance is at a liquid state it has more internal energy than a substance at solid state. This can be explained by the fact that at solid state particles are bonded together so the particles movement is restricted. At liquid state the particles are spaced out s they are able to move randomly so they have more internal energy than particles in a solid, which have their movements restricted. As particles in solids are bonded together this means that heat can be conducted from one particle to another easily. Conduction transfers thermal energy through the collision of neighbouring particles. Liquids are poor thermal conductors because their particles are not bonded together which makes it had for heat to be transferred from one particle to the other. The way heat is transferred in liquids is through convection. Convection is the heat transfer due to the current movement from warmer particles moving towards the section where cooler particles are and cooler particles moving towards the warmer section of a fluid, this is caused by different densities at different temperature. This explains why liquids tend to have higher rates of specific heat capacity compared to solids because heat is transferred much quicker through conduction than convection. If you compare the specific heat capacity of copper, (390Jkg- K- ) to the specific heat capacity of water, (4180Jkg- K- ) there is a significant difference. In general the specific heat capacity of a solid is significantly lower compared to most liquids expect from Mercury which has a specific heat capacity of 140Jkg- K- when is in a liquid state. This also explains why H O has a low specific heat capacity when its in solid state, ice. (2100Jkg- K- ) compared to when its in liquid state, water (4180Jkg- K- ) From my research I found out that there are two laws of Thermodynamics: The first law states that the net heat transfer ( Q) of a systems equal to the sum of the thermal energy. The second law states that the entropy of an isolated system never decreases. This means that heat cannot be 100% converted to useful energy because the heat released to entropy is never returned to the system. Entropy is like internal energy; it is a thermodynamic quantity that belongs to any system of objects. It is proportional to temperature. As the temperature increase, entropy increased. In a microscopic level, entropy measures the amount of disorder in a substance. When heat is added to the substance, the particles that make up the substance move faster in a random way. The greater the velocity of the particles this implies more disorder for the substance; therefore increasing its entropy. In some states, women did have the ability to vote but these rights were generally lost over the coming years, in some cases because married women did not legally have ownership of anything and therefore were not considered as individuals (Matthaei, 1982). They were expected to run the household, and did not have any educational qualifications (Evans, 1997). Families were also generally larger in this era than they are today, and women were expected to care for their children as part of their homely role. These problems were further compounded by the fact that the highly Puritanical society in some areas saw females as being more prone to sin than men, casting a shadow over the role of women in society. It was this view that led to the events of the Salem Witch Trials, in which 13 women were hanged. It must be noted here that men were also victim of the accusations, but they were aimed primarily at women. This further highlights the status of women as inferior within the society, and provides a good starting point to show just how far women have moved from this original starting point and how much has been gained for women's rights.
